Yesterday, we reported on the new Mars Attacks comics from IDW Publishing. Today, we look at some of the other Mars Attacks products slated to hit hobby stores next Spring and beyond. Helping us peek behind the curtain is Topps’ Licensing Manager, Adam Levine. Let’s get to it, before those pesky martians destroy a dog or something!

We know that IDW Publishing has announced comics and Abrams is doing a book. I’ve recently seen a bobble head doll on the Mars Attacks Facebook page. Can you tell me more about the bobble head dolls and what other licensed products collectors might expect?

The bobble heads are being produced by Funko Toys, and they’ll be doing much more than a single wobbler; They’ve also developed stylized versions for there successful POP! Line and upcoming BLOX! Series, as well as some other cool things that we’re not yet prepared to announce.

We have a great group of licensed partners on-board for Mars Attacks already, mostly geared at comics and collector fans. Among others we have Moebius Models, who will be producing our first ever plastic model kit, and we’re close to announcing a line of action figures and collector plush as well. A full size resin statue is also in development– and that’s not all. Plans are already underway for new products for 2013 and beyond!

Speaking of Facebook, you guys are doing an excellent job promoting Mars Attacks in general with the Facebook page. I’m amazed at how many “likes” you have. Can you tell me what Topps’ plan is? Are you using social media to spotlight the license ahead of the anniversary and the wave of new products?

For social media we’re just looking to keep fans engaged with Mars Attacks as we work towards new product releases and the debut of the IDW comic books. We plan to use Facebook to unveil new products with exclusive “first-looks”. We run a semi-weekly original cartoon there as well—which plays a little more with the funnier, satirical side of Mars Attacks—and is something that people love to share with their friends. Right now it’s all about keeping people excited for Mars Attacks!

When can collectors expect a Mars Attacks card set tied in with the anniversary? Can you tell me anything about it?

You really want the big news, don’t you? Well here it is: Yes, Topps will be releasing a Mars Attacks card set in 2012, hitting store shelves next summer! We’re keeping the details of the set tightly under wraps for now, but rest assured it will be something fans will be very excited about.

Other than Mars Attacks, what other licenses does Topps work with?

In addition to Mars Attacks we also have some other great card series’ you may be familiar with such as Garbage Pail Kids and Wacky Packages— as well as working with the various candy brands like Bazooka Bubble Gum and Ring Pop (among others). We’ll be doing some exciting things with a lot of these brands in the days to come, so keep an eye out!

Non-Sport Update thanks Adam very much for his time. And remember…you can be sure you’ll see lots more Mars Attacks news in upcoming issues of Non-Sport Update magazine, as well as on this site.
