It was a busy day this past Saturday at the popular Baltimore Comic Con, which is one of the premier comic conventions in the country with the focus clearly on comics. No Hollywood presence here, just a pop culture haven for comic enthusiasts!
The Non-Sport Update team set out on the far end the convention center after a hassle free registration process and set about reviewing the offerings from among the hundreds of dealer tables. One could find comics old and new, action figures, posters, statues and props, along with our focus, trading cards! It always amazes me to see all these items available in one place!
We made our way over to the artist alley area where we saw many familiar faces including Rhiannon Owens, Sara Richard, Mark Dos Santos, Bill McKay, and Uko Smith, among many other prominent artists. Non-Sport Update had hoped to talk with artist David Finch regarding his Batman artwork that adorns the just released Oct/Nov 2012 issue of Non-Sport Update, but the line was so long it would have taken at least an hour to get the opportunity, which speaks of how popular the professional comics guests were! All the artists we spoke to had outstanding original art for sale as well.
It was interesting to speak with the artists about the current state of the sketch card hobby and thier views on working on the sets, so much so that it may appear as a possible article in a future issue of Non-Sport Update. There was also a lot of discussion regrding the new Marvel Premier set being released by Upper Deck, it seems artists and dealers either love it or hate it, but you can’t say it hasn’t genereated discussion within the hobby!
It was another great show in a great city, there’s a lot to do outside of the convention center as well so make plans to come to Baltimore in 2013 you won’t be disappointed!
