In late-November, we wrote about two very limited-edition Walking Dead patch cards that were to be randomly-inserted in packs of The Walking Dead Season 1 Trading Cards. Embroidered police badges from both Rick and Shane’s shirts were made into two, one-of-one, oversized wardrobe cards and available via redemption cards found in random packs. Over the weekend, one of these jems surfaced.

Trading card dealer Henry Buchanan and his wife (who do business as Juniors Comics and Cards out of Austin, TX) found the Shane Walsh redemption card. The Buchanan’s first thought the card was the one of the 18 limited-edition cut-patch cards mentioned in the linked story above, but were shocked to learn the card was a one-of-one card. Buchanan redeemed the card at this past weekend’s WonderCon in Anaheim, CA. Buchanan sold the card to his long-time customer Rande, who was already purchased a complete set from Buchanan. The card was sold for $5,000. Rande (from CT) said he is a huge fan of The Walking Dead sketch cards and is excited to have something one-of-a-kind from the series.

Well done, Henry. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer dealer!

Too bad it landed in a dealer’s hands and not an actual fan – making the fan have to pay a premiuim for it sounds like a crap deal.

This is what happens with every big card in sports & non sports. Dealers buy cases…rip boxes until the big hit is made…then sell off the crap boxes with the promise of possible big hits…at a premium to the fans. We get screwed.

    This is modern day collecting.

Excellent and congrats to all that got what they wanted.

@ Who Cares, start up your own business and buy cases.

@ Nick Gerz, If a fan found it they might have put it up on eBay and gotten even more for it.

What it boils down to this is….you invest in a product then your chances of getting a “good hit” are greater. If you don’t invest…well, then your S.O.L.{shat out of luck}, like my father used to say.

Cant anyone be happy for other people’s good fortunes nowadays or do we all have to beotch and moan like the OWS crowd ?

Yes because dealers take no risk and get their cases for free and always come out on top and never pull duds and never have unsold cards blah blah blah

I met Pat at Wondercon and got to hold that bad boy before it got sold. Pretty nice 1/1. I think $5k was a steal for it. :)

    @ Led Zeppelin,

Of course dealers take risks. As stated in the article, there were only two of these cards made, hence not every dealer {or collector for that matter} was going to get these cards. That sounds pretty risky to me.

And if you wanted to purchase a case you could have, when pre-orders were being offered.

I don’t blame dealers for anything. They are the ones taking all the risk when buying cases and sometimes multiple cases for any new product. Some sell really well and I bet there are other sets that don’t sell quite so well. Again, risk. And on top of all that MONEY. And in today’s economy that’s risky enough.

    Peace.
