If you happen to be in New York City in early June and you are a fan of the art used in Topps’ Wacky Packages, Garbage Pail Kids, and Wax Eye’s Cereal Killers, you owe it to yourself to visit NYC’s Toy Tokyo, where a solo exhibit of artist Joe Simko’s work will be on display.

Joe Simko's Neon Underground

Simko has a ton of cool trading card and music-related credits. One of his t-shirts was featuring in Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist, he has designed posters for rock bands The Misfits and Gwar, he’s worked with Stephen Baldwin on a graphic novel series, and on and on.

The Toy Tokyo exhibit includes Joe’s Wacky Packages, Garbage Pail Kids, Cereal Killers art as well as his art for Sweet Rot, a series of books published by Schiffer Books. “There will be over 60 pieces of artwork on display and approximately 40 of the pieces are paintings for various trading card series” says Simko. He continues “The rest are paintings from my children’s book series The Sweet Rot and screen printed posters I designed for rock bands, roller derby, and horror films.”

For those who go, Simko tells us a majority of the artwork on display will be available for sale as are all of the original paintings for the trading card sets. Simko tells us a 20″ x 12″ acrylic painting of the Wacky Packages Series 2 character group shot will be showcased. “This painting was created for the all new Wacky Packages binder series that was just released” says Simko. Additionally, Cereal Killers card sets (hobby boxes and three-pack cereal box sets) will be available for sale at a special discount rate for the opening night only.

While the exhibit is at TT Underground (Toy Tokyo’s art Gallery), Toy Tokyo itself is definitely an interesting shop for NYC visitors. The store caries items from Hong Kong and Japan as well as well as domestic toys and collectibles. They also have rare and vintage items.

More info: Facebook members can find more information via the Facebook event.

If you go: An opening reception will take place Friday night, June 7 from 6 to 10 PM. Complimentary food and drink, courtesy of Sierra Nevada Beer, will be served. No word yet if Apple Dracs, Zomb’a Crunch, or Ape Guts in on the menu! The exhibit takes place at TT Underground at Toy Tokyo, 91 Second Ave, New York, New York 10003.
