It was an extraterrestrial weekend at the 57th Philly Non-Sports Show held this past weekend at the Merchants Square Mall in Allentown, PA. Saturday saw many attendees and guests sporting the latest in Mars Attacks shirts and alien garb, including Non-Sport Update’s Publisher Roxanne Toser with green hair highlights, green nails, and an attractive pair of alien slacks; Managing Editor Marlin Toser attracted attention with a green hat that lit up and could be seen throughout the show floor; and Production Manager Harris Toser was ready to party with a Mars Attacks themed Hawaiian shirt complete with disintegrating cows! The dealers also did their part by displaying many Mars Attacks cards and related items, and many Mars Attacks items were awarded as door prizes throughout the show.

Saturday saw a long line of collectors line up to gain admission to the show and once inside the show floor was buzzing with activity with both collectors and dealers having a successful day of buying and selling. Promotional cards are always popular at the show as well and at last count there were at least 46 different promo cards available! While walking the show floor there was a solid mix of vintage and modern cards available, so the show truly offers something for everyone. Once again collectors from all over came out for the show, including collectors from Canada and France as well as from all over the United States. The artists in attendance (Doug Cowen, Ed Repka, Sara Richard, Ted Dastick, Jr., Laura Inglis, Chrissy Spalone, Lark Sudol, and Brian Kong) all had fantastic artwork for sale as well and did an otherworldly job creating pumpkins on Sunday (editor’s note: more about the pumpkins, including pictures, is coming soon. A photo gallery of Philly shots is in the works as well)!

Philly Show

Sunday was a bit more laid back but it’s also a time to find some great deals and spend time talking with the manufacturers and other collectors. Rittenhouse Archives, Breygent Marketing, Cryptozoic Entertainment, Topps, ShopTopps, Famous Fabrics, Monsterwax, SideKick, and 258 West Authentic Signatures were all present at the show and were happy to speak with collectors. There was an incredible amount of upcoming products on display including many new releases from Cryptozoic Entertainment (Alphas, Psych, Revenge,Once Upon a Time, Archer); Breygent Marketing (Grimm, Worlds of Fantasy); and Rittenhouse Archives (James Bond 50th Anniversary, Spider-Man the Original Animated Series lenticulars).

The show also continues outside of the normal show hours, with many attendees getting together Friday night before the show in the hotel lobby, going to the Sands Casino and the Red Robin on Saturday, and the NSU Card Talk member gathering on Sunday before the opening of the show. There was a cavalcade of activities all weekend long!

Make plans to attend the Spring Philly Show, to be held May 4th and 5th, which will have a Star Wars theme and popular artists Tony and Elaine Perna, Sean Pence, Axebone, and Rhiannon Owens as exhibiting artists. I even had it on good authority that some entertaining characters from overseas will be in attendance!
