Following up their Classic Mythology set from 2012, which was an overwhelming success for Perna Studios, the company has just released Spellcasters, another all-original artwork set featuring art from the top names in sketch cards today. The cards feature wizards, witches, warlocks, and other characters of a supernatural nature. Tony and Elaine Perna have once again produced a set that will have collectors clamoring for more!

Spellcasters has been released in a 4-card pack format and each pack also includes an original hand drawn sketch card and a clear chase card with art by Tony Perna. Each pack is numbered to 682 . My packs were numbered from 566 to 570 and if you ordered five packs, you were guaranteed a base set. A full base card set consists of 20 cards. Some of my favorite base cards were of a female shaman by Rhiannon Owens, a witch with a white cat by Sean Pence, and a fire fairy with large rainbow-colored wings hovering over a moonlit cityscape by Ingrid Hardy. Every card in the base set is a masterpiece in its own right. Card backs contain a narrative that interacts with the depicted image on the front.

There are some out of this world bonus cards included, the best being the hand-drawn sketch cards. The list of artists is impressive – Tony and Elaine Perna, Soni-Alcorn Hender, Hanie Mohd, Kate Bradley, and J.D. Seeber, as well as other talented artists have contributed spell bounding original artwork for collectors to admire and enjoy.

Randomly inserted bonus cards include a lenticular card by Meghan Hetrick limited to 50 (take my word for it that card is amazing; one of the best lenticular cards I have ever seen!); a bonus 6th clear frosted chase card; and a redemption card that can be exchanged for a complete set of the six clear chase cards, the five-card preview set, and the five-card promo set.

Tony Perna of Perna Studios told Non-Sport Update that “Spellcasters was a new experience for Elaine and me. Classic Mythology was pretty straight forward in the sense that the characters already had rich developed back stories. As long as artist stuck to the classic versions of these characters, we were good to go. Even though Spellcasters was a bit tougher for the artists to create characters and creatures within that world, they all did a fantastic job on their cards. Elaine and I were overwhelmed with the quality of artwork the artists keep producing for us. Meghan’s lenticular chase card wasn’t originally even supposed to exist. Meghan’s artwork was originally going to be used as a base card. She was finished early and sent in her image to us. Shortly after that, we received an email from Versicolor Productions offering a new lenticular card option and wanted to know if we had anything we would like to use for it. Well, since Meghan had a tonal version of her artwork as well as a colored version, Elaine suggested we try using that. I am so glad we did as the final card came out fantastic! Craig Yeung’s base card artwork was also used as a frosted clear card which Versicolor sent to us as a surprise. We thought this would make a really cool bonus chase card so we decided to include it in our set as well. Our set was sold out pretty quickly and we have the fans to thank for that. Without the fans we wouldn’t be where we are now. We have one more card we are going to be offering fans as an endcap to the first Spellcasters set. It’s a ‘Thank You’ card with artwork by Richard Pace. These will be given out for the price of postage.”

Although the set was sold-out from Perna Studios prior to the cards releasing, unopened packs, sets, and chase are being offered by non-sports card dealers, many of whom will be at the Philly Non-Sports Card Show in Allentown, PA this weekend, May 4-5th, so come to the show and conjure up some magic to help find these cards from your favorite dealers and collectors in attendance.
