One of the highlights of this past weekend’s NYCC was the impressive artist line-up in artist alley, which took up most of the room in a separate hall at the show. The NSU contingent spent quite a bit time walking through the aisles and visiting with artists who are sure to be familiar to non-sports trading card collectors, along with many well-known comic book artists.

One of the first artists we saw was Sara Richard, who has recently worked on sets such as Dangerous Divas and Vampirella. Sara had some beautiful sketch cards from the recently released Bettie Page set for sale, including two of the oversized artist incentive cards. Next up was Cat Staggs, who had some incredible original artwork from various Star Wars projects for sale. Cat told us she will be doing some base artwork for Star Wars Galaxy 7 and a limited number of pack inserted sketches.

As usual, we stopped by to visit with artist Brian Kong, and as usual Brian was not at his table, which is a bit of a running gag we have with Brian. Holding down the fort as always was Brian’s wife Cindy (wearing her special Comic Con glasses), who we always enjoy visiting with and we saw several great pieces of art that Brian had for sale at the show.

In what has become more noticeable at all the shows we attend, many artists who are not sketch card artists are offering sketch card sized art for sale. It seems that these artists like the idea of sketch cards and have latched onto the concept. It’s good to see non-sports have an influence outside of the hobby that extends to other areas of pop culture.

Among other sketch card artists we saw at the show were Mike Lilly, Katie Cook, Mark Dos Santos, and Kristen Allen. We even saw an artist who was doing concept art for a proposed Mars Attacks set from Topps that hopefully we will see next year.

It was an enjoyable time seeing all these artists and like the entire show itself, it was tough to see everything in one day and take it all in, but we did our best! See everyone next year, it was a blast!
