Munchkin, the trading card game from Steve Jackson Games, is being turned into a traditional trading card series by Renegade Game Studios. It’s a bit confusing so let’s explain. Munchkin is a card game that dates back to 2001. The game is written by Steve Jackson and illustrated by John Kovalic. The game has had numerous expansion and sequels over the years. In fact, just last year, Steve Jackson Games released a 15-card Mars Attacks themed expansion Munchkin Apocalypse Mars Attacks.

Renegade Game Studios

Today’s announcement from Renegade Game Studios (the company formed by former Cryptozoic Entertainment Founder and former COO Scott Gaeta) has the San Diego-based game company turning the game cards into traditional trading cards. The license will also allow the company to produce Munchkin dog tags and “Treasure Packs”. Trading cards are up first and the initial series is expected in the Fall. The series will feature a base set, original sketch cards, stickers, autograph cards, and unique playtest cards that you can use in your Munchkin games at home. Boxes will consist of 24 packs and at least one sketch card or autograph card, on average, will be found in every box. The company plans to announce additional content (other inserts, redemptions, guest artists, and more) over the coming months.

“We are really excited to be working with the folks at Steve Jackson games on this,” says Renegade President Scott Gaeta. “Munchkin has a phenomenal fan following and we’re honored to be a part of its community.”

“I’ve got an email from over three years ago that outlines a Munchkin trading card project,” says Phil Reed, CEO of Steve Jackson Games. “So seeing Renegade Game Studios tackle this project makes me very happy.”
