NSU friend (and incredibly talented artist) Jeff Zapata contacted us over the weekend to tell us about a series of auctions he is organizing which will benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy. Zapata is working with neighbor Amanda Bickerstaff on the project. According to Zapata, Bickerstaff has put together a small organization of volunteers and supporters to help those truly effected by the storm. Zapata says “They have tirelessly fed and supplied thousands. To help Amanda’s cause, I’ve asked Jay Lynch, Brent Engstrom, Neil Camera to donate Wacky sketch cards or any art from their personal collections. Our plan is to have this art auctioned on eBay and have all funds go toward Upper West Side Loves.” Zapata will also be donating art.

Let’s back up a bit to explain how the UWSLoves organization began. Bickerstaff writes “While watching the devastation that Hurricane Sandy brought to the Northeastern Seaboard and our beloved NYC, we became more and more frustrated that we could do nothing to help those in need. After one of us was sent to a RedCross Shelter in the East Hamptons that was immediately shut down and another could not find anywhere to donate her time, it became clear that we needed to start a grassroots movement to bring a measure of comfort and help to those on the LES. With the help of Twitter, we found each other and within a day we had made food for 60 people, created two hubs for people to donate materials on the UWS, and created [the UWSloves blog] and a way to collect money donations.”

Bickerstaff and her UWSLoves group has focused on providing hot meals and food to Sandy Victims. In a blog entry written for another site Bickerstaff wrote about how the organization got started, she says “I truly believe in the healing properties of cooking and eating.”

And now back to the auctions. Zapata is trying to get the word out there to as many collectors as possible. Up for auction (via eBay) will be a mix of cards and original art. Zapata tells us that Lynch has drawn four special sketches just for this occasion. As of this writing, the auctions are scheduled to begin this Friday to coincide with Black Friday. Search for eBay ID “UWSLoves”. Details should also be posted on the UWSLloves blog. Below are images of the art and cards up for auction.

You can read more about Upper West Side Loves on their blog uwsloves.wordpress.com. You can also follow them on Twitter (@UWSLoves).
