We’ve heard some rumblings that Topps is in the initial stages of planning a comeback for Mars Attacks. Those paying attention may have noticed that Topps has been doing more with it’s own branded properties—Wacky Packages, Garbage Kids, and Bazooka Joe, so a Mars Attacks return definitely makes sense. 2012 is the 50th anniversary of original Bubbles/Topps 1962 series, which gives the Manhattan-based card and confectionery company all the more reason.
Mars Attacks was always one of the hobby’s most popular card series. In fact, in our 1999 cover story, “The Top 99 Card Sets Of All Time,” Mars Attacks was voted number one “by a landslide.”
There was a resurgence in Mars Attacks when the 1996 Tim Burton movie was released. During the lead-up to the movie, Topps issued Mars Attacks Archives, which reprinted the original series and added new art and chase cards. Once the movie hit theaters, a Widevision series was released. The movie also fueled many licensed products including model kits, books, toys, t-shirts, and more.
Other then collectors continued love and interest in Mars Attacks, we haven’t heard much about the property since the movie. NSU has heard rumors of a new card series as well as some exciting products from third-party licensees, all coming during the second-half of 2012. Who’s ready for another invasion?
