Torchwood: Miracle Day Gets An Interactive App

Torchwood Miracle DayWe’ve written a lot about Starz’ upcoming Torchwood: Miracle Day series (premiering July 8th at 10 PM EST). And we’ll have an exclusive interview with Kai Owen (who plays “Rhys Williams” on the series) in the upcoming Aug/Sep ’11 issue of Non-Sport Update magazine. We’re kind of excited about it, in case you haven’t already figured that out.

Nearly everything gets an app these days and Torchwood is no exception. Prior to the premier of Miracle Day, Starz will launch Torchwood: Web of Lies, an app that features 10, three-minute “motion comic narratives” which will provide clues to Torchwood: Miracle Day. The first motion comic narrative will be available before the launch of the series and additional narratives and games will be available to download after each week’s show.

According to Starz’ press release, “Torchwood: Web of Lies is an episodic interactive experience for iOS that fuses together motion comic and gameplay elements to tell an original and digitally exclusive Torchwood story.  Players will participate in a parallel storyline to Torchwood: Miracle Day that includes lead characters Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper – voiced by John Barrowman and Eve Myles.”

The release continues “It reveals a past day in the lives of Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper – a day they’ve both forgotten.  The events of that day fuel a modern day conspiracy-laced treasure hunt, as Holly Mokri, voiced by Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse, Tru Calling, Buffy The Vampire Slayer), labors to uncover the secrets of Miracle Day. Each week a new episode unlocks, allowing players to access another piece of original motion comic narrative and game which ties into and extends plot developments of the show, as well as providing new twists in its own narrative.”

The app itself and first motion comic narrative will be free. The additional nine motion comic narratives can be purchased as in-app purchases for 99 cents for a pack of three, or all ten for $2.99.

The app has been developed by BBC Worldwide Promotions and BBC Worldwide Digital Entertainment and Games. The story line has been written by Miracle Day writers Jane Espenson and Ryan Scott.
