Next Saturday, video game champions, game designers, and video game industry personalities will be honored in an awards ceremony in Fairfield, IA. The ceremonies are part of a unique art gallery exhibition appearing in Fairfield’s ICON Gallery titled: The Video Game Trading Cards & Posters of Twin Galaxies. More than 1,000 all-different, colorful trading cards and posters will be on display that commemorate the history of the global video game culture, from the early 1970s up to the present.  In fact, NSU was featured on one of the cards when Twin Galaxies visited the Philly Non-Sports Card Show in May of 2012. Those going to the exhibition might even spot the card art as part of the display. More than 80 people appearing on the cards will be present to receive awards.

The event is being conducted to publicize Ottumwa, IA’s efforts to develop the official International Video Game Hall of Fame & Museum (IVGHOF). As part of the efforts to inspire support for the IVGHOF, on Sunday, August 3rd, the Awards recipients will travel to nearby Ottumwa to participate in the re-creation on East Main Street of a famous LIFE magazine photo that, in 1982, featured the 16 greatest video game players of that time. Some of the video gamers shown in that 1982 photo will be on hand to join the attendees to the “awards weekend” as they pose for a re-enactment of the famous 1982 picture.

Since 1982, Ottumwa has been known as “The VIdeo Game Capital of the World” and is considered the “birthplace of organized video game playing” by video game historians.

The event and Awards Ceremonies will be hosted by Fairfield Mayor Ed Malloy, Ottumwa Mayor Tom Lazio and Twin Galaxies Founder Walter Day. The Art Gallery Exhibition will be on display August 1-23, 2014.

As part of the Awards weekend, the official Pac-Man, coming from Namco headquarters in Chicago, will be present at the ICON Gallery on Friday night, August 1st, as part of Fairfield’s acclaimed “First Friday Artwalk.” Also, Pac-Man will be present to sign autographs and pose for pictures all day Saturday, August 2nd, as the ICON Gallery hosts a gala reception for all the Awards recipients, allowing the public to meet them and get copies of their trading cards autographed.

This Gallery showing will examine the history of the global video game culture as commemorated in more than 1,000 posters and trading cards. The Twin Galaxies Video Game Trading Card Set was created to commemorate the history of the global video game culture, honoring the iconic industry pioneers, the video game personalities, the world champions & contest winners and the landmark events and historic milestones. The more than 200 Twin Galaxies posters were created between August, 1982 and 2009 to honor important events in the history of competitive eSports. Walter Day, founder of the card set, says: “The vision of the card set has transcended the world of card collecting. We strive to use the cards to create an historic tapestry that can fulfill the artistic and educational needs of Art Galleries and Museums, as well as the study of history in the modern classroom.”

Attendance to the Gallery Exhibition and Awards Ceremony is free of charge. For the 2nd straight year, this art gallery exhibition was funded through contributions from Eric Tessler, of LaHabra, CA. Mr. Tessler is an acclaimed member of the arcade restoration community in California and is a distinguished supporter of video game cinema.

More information about the exhibition can be found on the event’s Facebook page.
